AIM & OBJECTIVES

This course, which meets the requirements of Ireland's Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Act, 2005 and insurance requirements, covers all aspects of manual handling techniques and practices.

 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

All staff who will be involved in the handling and movement of goods.

 

PROGRAMME

As we are always pleased to customise the Programmes, the specific course content will depend on you particular needs and requirements.

The topics of a typical programme would include...

  • The law relating to manual handling

  • The anatomy and biomechanics of the spine and muscles, and how injuries and damage take place from manual handling.

    • The function of the spine, inter-vertebral disc, muscles and ligaments;

    • How certain hazardous postures can contribute to the risk of injury.

  • Guidance on fitness for the task, written guidance can be given on exercises for flexibility and muscle toning.

  • The specific manual handling hazards identified in the risk assessment and possible measures to avoid or reduce manual handling.

  • Reducing risk of injury by, for example, smaller loads or sharing the manual handling or mechanical solutions.

  • Good handling techniques and practice at applying these techniques.

  • Procedures for dealing with unfamiliar loads

  • Instruction on appropriate clothing and footwear while handling loads and on PPE if essential for the work activity

  • The maintenance of the workplace in a safe condition.

  • Co-operation of trained employees

The Course includes general Health & Safety information and practical demonstrations by both the instructor and by course participants.

 

LOCATION & DURATION

This half-day course (3.5 hours) is delivered on site at the participant’s place of work.  The programme can be delivered at a weekend if work requirements so demand.
